    Carrollton Zofran Lawyer

Morning Sickness is common among women during the first trimester of pregnancy.  Zofran is a popular nausea and morning sickness medicine prescribed to pregnant women to treat nausea and vomiting caused by morning sickness.  A new study recently published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology suggests that taking Zofran during the first trimester of pregnancy increases the chances of severe birth defects and injuries to the mother.

Zofran is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline and is available in the generic form as ondansetron.  Zofran and ondansetron affect seratonin levels in the brain to prohibit nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.  The initial FDA approval was for Zofran to be used to treat cancer patients and after surgery nausea.  It morphed, as most drugs do, into other uses, in this case for morning sickness in pregnant women. If you or your baby has suffered injuries due to the drug Zofran, it is important you seek the assistance of a Carrollton Zofran lawyer to file a defective drug claim.

Zofran and Ondansetron Dangerous in First Trimester of Pregnancy

The new findings come from a study of 900,000 women that was commissioned by Dr. Gideon Koren.  Review of the study found a “2-fold increased risk of cardiac malformations with ondansetron (Zofran), leading to an overall 30 percent increased risk of major congenital malformations.”  According to the study, almost 80 percent of women suffer from morning sickness with over 1 million women being exposed to Zofran or its generic each year.
