What is Boston Scientific Vaginal Mesh?

Pelvic mesh, which is often called transvaginal mesh, is used most commonly to treat women suffering from pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence. What are those disorders?

    • Pelvic Organ Prolapse – A woman’s pelvic floor is similar to a hammock. After giving birth to a child, that pelvic floor can move downward causing the organs to drop as well. Among the organs the pelvic floor helps keep in place are the bladder, uterus, vagina, small bowel, and the rectum. This leads to chronic pain in the woman suffering from pelvic organ prolapse.
    • Stress Urinary Incontinence – Another common ailment for child-bearing women and older women. It occurs when urine exits the body when doing an activity such as coughing, sneezing, or lifting. The cause is the weakening of the pelvic floor.

Vaginal Mesh is used to replace or strengthen the pelvic floor. It is made of a synthetic material that is rather porous. Boston Scientific Vaginal Mesh is one of the more common brands used.

Boston Scientific has a number of products on the market. The FDA first approved Boston Scientific Vaginal Mesh in 1996. It is estimated that well over 300,000 women underwent surgery to implant Boston Scientific Vaginal Mesh.

Do I Have a Defective Boston Scientific Pelvic Mesh?

Most women don’t tell their friends about the pelvic floor surgery they just underwent. Very few people ask the details about the exact medical products being used during a surgery. We urge you to inquire with the doctor or surgeon that performed your surgery to see what, if any, transvaginal mesh was used during your procedure.

Boston Scientific Vaginal Mesh & Bladder Sling Defects

The Food & Drug Administration has been leery of vaginal mesh products since 2008. In 2008, over 1,000 reports were made from women that were affected by the vaginal mesh eroding or growing into their vaginal walls. Then, in 2011, the FDA received almost 3,000 reports of injury causing the FDA to say that complications from transvaginal mesh were “not rare.” Doctors and patients were urged to go over all alternatives before using vaginal mesh.

The story of how Boston Scientific pelvic mesh hit the market is even more bizarre. The Boston Medical Vaginal Mesh manufacturers used an expedited process known as FDA 510(k) that allows new products “substantially similar” to existing approved devices to submit applications without first conducting safety studies. The similar device that Boston Scientific called “substantially similar” was known as ProteGen Vaginal Sling and it had to recalled in the 1990’s.

Side Effects of Defective Boston Scientific Vaginal Mesh

    • Erosion of Mesh into Vaginal Wall
    • Infections
    • Chronic Pain Often Affecting Sexual Intercourse
    • Vaginal Bleeding
    • Scarring
    • Nerve Damage
    • Disfigurement of Vagina
    • Perforation of Organs
    • Return of Pelvic Organ Prolapse or Stress Urinary Incontinence

All of these complications usually require additional surgery to repair the damage caused. Sometimes, the complications cannot be undone, and long term damage is caused that decreases a woman’s quality of life.
