A federal judge overseeing litigation involving Johnson & Johnson’s Ethicon Transvaginal Mesh encouraged a global settlement between 7 transvaginal mesh manufacturers and the thousands of plaintiffs asserting claims for their defective medical devices. According to, the Judge said during a hearing that he could not “imagine a corporation facing potentially billions of dollars in verdicts wouldn’t find it advisable to try to achieve a settlement for a much lesser sum” and pointed to other “rather large” verdicts from similar cases. The verdicts he was referring to were a $18.5 million and $26.7 million verdicts for women suffering injuries from transvaginal mesh.
