Five Things You Can Get That Will Help Your Personal Injury Case

Posted on - Monday, October 12, 2015 under Personal Injury

The essence of what I do as a personal injury lawyer is help people who are dealing with the aftermath of a serious injury or loss of a loved one get the compensation and resources they need to recover. My clients expect and deserve the peace of mind that comes from knowing that their lawyer will leave no stone unturned to get them a successful outcome.

While I’ll do everything I can to make your case as strong as possible, there are five crucial things you can do after you’ve been injured which will help me do that:

    1. Get Medical Attention. Even if you don’t think you’ve been injured, get medical attention or see your doctor as soon as possible after an accident. Some injuries don’t show symptoms until weeks or months later. Having a complete medical history and records from the time of the accident can go a long way towards proving that the injuries you are seeking compensation for were caused by the defendant’s actions.
    2. Get the Facts. Decisions in personal injury lawsuits are based on the law and the facts, and those facts are determined on the basis of evidence. You don’t need to turn the scene of your accident into some kind of “CSI” crime scene, but you can take pictures, talk to witnesses and get their impressions and contact information, and try to preserve any physical evidence.
    3. Get a Lawyer. Whether it’s me or someone else, talking to a personal injury lawyer as soon as possible will allow them to start taking the necessary steps to protect your rights. You could lose your claim for damages altogether if you wait too long. Additionally, insurance company investigators and attorneys will already be hard at work right after your accident trying to find ways to deny or low-ball any claims for damages. The longer you wait to meet with and retain an attorney, the longer the head start for the insurance company.
    4. Get Off the Phone. The other reason to get a lawyer as soon as you can is because insurance companies will try to take advantage of you and get you to settle your claim for as little as possible. If you start negotiating with them, you are setting yourself up for disaster and could talk your way out of a much larger sum of money. DO NOT negotiate with an insurance company without speaking with a lawyer first.
    5. Get Real. Everything you say to your lawyer is protected by the attorney-client privilege. So tell them everything; good, bad, or otherwise. Don’t leave anything out because you think it may hurt your case; not telling your attorney about a crucial fact is how you can hurt your case. You need to be able to trust your lawyer, and your lawyer needs to be able to trust you.
