Antibiotics Levaquin and Avelox Can Double Risk of Potentially Fatal Heart Problems

Posted on - Friday, June 10, 2016 under Dangerous Drugs & Products Antibiotics Levaquin and Avelox Can Double Risk of Potentially Fatal Heart Problems

Levaquin, a widely-prescribed antibiotic, has recently been linked to an increased risk of fatal heart problems according to two separate research studies. The Parian Law Firm, one of Georgia’s premier dangerous and defective drug injury law firms, is currently investigating and pursuing claims related to Levaquin, Cipro, Avelox, and other fluoroquinolones.

Manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceutical, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, Levaquin is a commonly used antibiotic prescribed for the treatment of respiratory and urinary tract infections. Two independent medical studies, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association and the British Medical Journal, found that Levaquin, Cipro, Avelox, and other fluoroquinolones double the risk of potentially fatal aortic aneurysms and aortic dissections.

An aortic aneurysm occurs when an enlarged or bulging part of the aorta bursts. The survival rate for individuals who experience an aortic aneurysm is only 50 percent. AN aortic dissection is when the walls of the aorta break down and allow blood to seep into the layers of tissue in and around the heart.

Other studies have linked fluoroquinolones to a serious, painful, and irreversible nerve injury known as peripheral neuropathy.

Lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturers of these drugs here in Georgia and across the country.

The serious and deadly heart and nerve problems associated with these antibiotics should be cause for concern among the over 26 million Americans who are currently using or were prescribed such drugs in the past.
