How long does it take to get divorced? – by Ryan Farmer

The simple answer is… it depends. No two divorces are the same and if an attorney ever
tells you that they can have your case wrapped up in a certain amount of time or promise you a
certain result, you should immediately run. No attorney can ever guarantee you a result or that
they can wrap your case up in a definite period of time. Why, you might ask? First and foremost,
neither your attorney nor the attorney on the other side have any way to control the final
outcome. The only person that decides the ultimate outcome of your case is the trier of fact –
either a judge or jury. Though no attorney can give you a definitive answer, most divorce or
domestic matters take anywhere from 6 to 12 months to complete, although it can take longer
due to the depth and intricacies of the various issues in your case.

What can you do to ensure your case is handled timely and effectively?

For starters, hiring the right attorney is the single most important decision you’ll make in
any legal proceeding. Ensuring that you hire someone who is honest, driven, and prepared will
go further to ensure a positive result than anything else. The worst thing you can do for your case
is hire an attorney who is not honest and who is unprepared.

Second, listen to your attorney. You’ve invested time and likely substantial money into
someone to represent your best interests and get you the best possible result, so you need to trust
that person when they tell you what to do or not to do. At times, the advice they give you may
not be exactly what you want to hear, but it’s important to remember that your attorney
understands both the legal and practical issues involved in your matter. As was stated earlier,
there are numerous factors that impact your case. Such factors involve not just the law or facts of
your case but also the practical intricacies like strategery in the courtroom or the common
approach an opposing counsel may take.

Finally, communication with your attorney is vital. Making sure you hire an attorney
where you’re not just another case or number is important to ensure that communication between
you and them is as desired. Throughout your case there will be periods where you may not hear
much from your attorney, for instance during the discovery process, while there will be periods
where you talk to your attorney on a weekly or even daily basis to deal with emergency matters
or to prepare for an upcoming hearing. However, you should always be able to speak with your
attorney within a reasonable amount of time after contacting them.

Beware of attorneys who promise you any result or tell you they can have your case wrapped up
in a certain period of time. Our attorneys at Parian Lawyers are committed to open and honest
communication with you in a timely fashion and will always be honest and prepared when it
comes to your case. Give us a call today to setup an appointment to see if our office is a good fit
for you in your matter.

Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome. Every case is different and must be evaluated on its own facts.
